Have you ever had an emergency happen on schedule? No, we didn’t think so—that’s probably why they’re called emergencies. At Premier Walk-in Dental in Rockledge, FL, we are prepared to handle your emergency when it happens. So, if you just bit down on a chunk of ice, or a hard piece of candy—or that soup spoon hit a tooth in just the wrong spot—and now you have a cracked tooth, Dr. Jeff Nichols and his team of dental hygienists and dental assistants are ready to help when you walk through the door of our office.
What You Can do about a Cracked Tooth, Rockledge, FL
If possible, find the pieces of your cracked tooth and carefully rinse them in water. You might want to place a towel in the sink, so you don’t lost a tooth fragment down the drain. Save the fragments in a sealed container filled with milk and bring them with you to our office. If there is bleeding, apply a piece of gauze until the bleeding stops. A cold compress may ease any pain or swelling.
What We Can do about a Cracked Tooth
What Dr. Nichols does about your cracked tooth depends on the severity of the injury to your tooth. If your tooth is more chipped that cracked, then Dr. Nichols may be able to repair your tooth with a filling. If the chip is in a tooth that is shows when you smile, then we can use cosmetic dental bonding. With this procedure, Dr. Nichols blends composite resin materials to match your natural tooth color. Then, this material is applied to your chipped tooth and molded to restore your tooth’s natural shape. If more than one tooth in your smile zone is broken, then porcelain veneers may be the best option. Veneers are wafer thin layers of dental porcelain that are adhesively bonded to your front teeth to rebuild and repair your smile.
If a larger portion of your tooth has broken off, or if there is a deep crack or severe decay, then Dr. Nichols may recommend a porcelain crown. Also called a dental cap, a crown fully encapsulates a tooth to protect it from further damage and strengthen the tooth to withstand the pressure of chewing and biting. Moreover, a crown—plain and simple—makes your tooth look better. For a crack that runs deep into the tooth, Dr. Nichols may recommend a root canal.
