December 30, 2020
For years, tobacco products have been linked to multiple health issues such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Most people know that tobacco usage can causes staining on teeth, but did you also know that it can make your mouth extremely parched, which can lead to other very serious health issues? Keep reading to learn how tobacco can cause dry mouth in Rockledge and the further complications that can come from it.
The Dangers of Dry Mouth Caused by Tobacco Usage
Currently, more than 16 million Americans are suffering from a disease that is related to tobacco usage, and nearly 40% of smokers suffer from dry mouth. This is because tobacco is extremely dehydrating. Dry mouth may not sound like that big of an issue, but here are some serious oral problems it can lead to over time if not addressed:
Increased Plaque Build-Up
When tobacco is used, it dehydrates the body. This leads to a reduced amount of saliva being produced in the mouth. Saliva plays an integral role in rinsing plaque and bacteria from your teeth. Over time, a lack of it can cause plaque to build up on your teeth, which later turns in to tartar. If not addressed this can lead to tooth decay and gum infection and disease.
Mouth Sores
The heat that is involved in most tobacco producing products can cause sores to form in and around the soft tissues of your mouth. If these lesions are not given time to heal, they can become infected and even lead to oral cancer.
Halitosis
Otherwise known as bad breath, this condition is extremely common amongst tobacco users. Similar to plaque build-up, lack of saliva flow allows for the spread of bacteria in the mouth. This leads to foul smelling breath.
Chapped Lips
If you or someone you know is an avid tobacco user, it’s likely there are also chapped lips involved. No matter how much lip balm or moisturizer you use on your lips, the overall dehydration from tobacco usage will continue to cause your lips to dry and crack.
Despite the severe oral effects that tobacco products can have on your mouth, research has proven that it is not good for your overall health. If you or someone you know regularly uses tobacco products, there has never been a better time to make the move toward better health by quitting!
