How to Tell When Your Veneers Need to Be Replaced
October 19, 2023
Veneers are an excellent investment because they address many issues at once. They provide natural-looking results that can last for years. Unfortunately, veneers aren’t permanent. They’ll need to be replaced, eventually. Here are the most common signs that it’s time for new veneers.
Signs You Need Veneer Replacements
Veneers can lose their bond with your teeth over time. It’s not uncommon for one to fall off after several years. However, losing a veneer isn’t the only reason you may need a replacement. It’s time to see your cosmetic dentist if you experience:
- Visible Damage: Veneers are durable, but they can chip or crack.
- Decay Underneath: Veneers can’t get cavities, but your underlying teeth are still vulnerable to decay.
- Gum Disease: Gum disease can cause a gap between the tops of your veneers and the gum line.
- Poor Application: Your veneers may need to be replaced because of improper sizing, poor bonding, or misalignment.
- Discoloration: Veneers are made of porcelain, which is stain-resistant. Your enamel can still discolor, which can make your veneers look stained.
Get the Most from Your Veneers
Although veneers don’t last forever, your dazzling new smile can thrive for a decade or more with the correct aftercare:
- Choose the Right Products: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratching your veneers. Scratches can make them look discolored and trap food residue, which can damage them over time.
- Commit to Brushing and Flossing: Brush your teeth for two minutes twice daily. Floss your teeth at least once a day
- Watch What You Eat: Limit sugars and starches to reduce your risk of tooth decay. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods. Moderate your alcohol consumption, which can weaken the bonding material.
- Break Bad Oral Habits: Don’t use your teeth in place of scissors or other tools. Don’t chew on inedible objects, including your fingernails.
- Visit Your Dentist: Schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist every 6 months. Your dentist will check your veneers at each appointment to ensure they are undamaged and functioning as intended.
You won’t have to budget for replacements often by giving your teeth and gums the attention they need
